Donna Dixon, 71, of McKeesport, died August 28, 2020 at home. She was born on August 1, 1949.

Donna is survived by her daughters, Donneshia Dixon, Quiana Dixon; brother, Dennis Gore; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ora Dixon, son, Derrick Dixon and brother, Donald Dixon.

Phyllis L. Bryant, beloved daughter of the late Rocinlus and Bertha Johnson Young, was born on September 1, 1947, in Elizabeth, PA. Mrs. Bryant departed this life on August 27, 2020, joining her loved ones who preceded her in death: husband, William Bryant, son, Darnell M. Johnson, stepson, Johnnie Payton, stepdaughter, Catherine Andrews, siblings, Duane Young,  Yvonne Young, Loretta Butler, Marion Carter, Toni Rosser-Booker, Donald and Ronald Young.

Phyllis is survived by her three daughters, Tasha (Sam) Johnson-Phelps of McKeesport, Tamera Bryant of White Oak, Kera Bryant of McKeesport; 12 grandchildren; Lanisha Foster (Travis), Janai, Donte’ia, Tyjuan (Shawree), Taj L. Johnson, Rosheeda, Khaleel, Kyla, Kalan, Kalista Bryant, LaRita and Raymond Jenkins; 7 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Barbara Ann (Al) Lawrence, Deborah  Young, Renee Davis, all of Detroit, Denise Whatley of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, Charles and Robert Young of McKeesport; two sisters-in-law, Princess Young, Sandra Young; a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Gregory S. Hammons

Gregory S. Hammons was born on February 8, 1958 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Marion Ramseur Hammons and the late Lee Cornelius Hammons.

Herk or Herky as he was affectionately known by his family and friends graduated from Clairton High School in Clairton, Pennsylvania. During his high school years, he was outstanding in sports, gaining a spot on the Junior and High School football, basketball, and baseball teams.  Following his love of art and drawing, he also attended the Art Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Soon after, he was employed at United States Steel Clairton Works, and the City of Clairton Street Department. 

Herk had a strong passion for music, singing and dancing, so much so, during the 70’s he and a few of his friends formed a local band.  Herk had a great love for people, a kind heart, and was very personable, he made friends easily. He was always willing to give anyone the shirt off his own back.

Crystal Shoffner Hall, 56, died August 17, 2020. She was born September 29, 1963 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Crystal was the daughter of Alonzo Hall and Greta Elizabeth Ball-Hall. Crystal was affectionately known as Crys.

Elder Crystal leaves behind but will remain in the hearts of her brother Curtis Hall, Sr., nephew (son) Curtis, Jr. and his dedicated wife Renisha, their children Skylar, Rashiya, Rihanna, and little Crystal Hall; fun loving cousins (too many to name) and a host of relatives and friends.

Darryl Marlon Harper

Darryl Marlon Harper was born on August 18, 1950, to the late Chester and Joretta (Gaither) Harper in Plainfield, New Jersey. Darryl peacefully passed away surrounded by his loved ones, at UPMC Shadyside Hospital, on August 18, 2020, which was his 70th birthday. 

Darryl’s family moved to McKeesport, Pennsylvania in the early 1950s.  His family attended at Bethlehem Baptist Church in McKeesport where Darryl was baptized at the age of 12.  Darryl attended McKeesport Area High School and graduated valedictorian in 1968.  While in high school, he met the love of his life Valerie Lloyd at Roller Rink, when she was just 15 years old.  He was particularly enamored by her tight pants. 

Her father would not allow them to date until she was 16.  On Valerie’s 16th birthday, the persistent Darryl knocked on the Lloyd family door and asked permission to take Valerie on a date.  (Darryl wanted to take Valerie to the drive-in movies on this first date.  Her father granted permission, but insisted that Valerie wear pants.) Three years later they were married on September 4, 1971. They enjoyed a loving marriage for the past almost 49 years.

James Elliott Payne, 77, of McKeesport was born on October 14, 1942, to the late James McRuby and Alberta (Swaney) Payne in Elizabeth, PA. James passed away on August 19, 2020, in his home. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jean Edward Payne, three sons, Dewayne, Anthony, Mark Payne, and brother, George Payne.  

James is survived by his daughters, Myra  Payne-Greene, Kimberly Payne, Robin Payne of Hampton, VA, Deitra Payne of Suitland, MD, Savana Little John of San Francisco, CA; sons, James  Payne, Jr. of Pittsburgh, Scott Payne of Cleveland, OH, Kymani McNelis of McKeesport; 24 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Ruby Armella-Payne (Chester) Walker of McKeesport; brothers, Carl Payne of San Francisco, CA, Kenneth Payne of McKeesport; nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends.

Cheryl Lynn (Thompson) Coleman

Cheryl Lynn Thompson Coleman died August 5, 2020. She was born on July 11, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois, the second of three children to the late Robert F. and Doris S. Thompson.

No one knew the profound impact this child would make or leave on so many lives, but GOD knew. She was raised with the core values of putting God first then family.  

Cheryl accepted the Lord at a very early age.  She loved the Lord so much and fulfilling our Grandfather’s wishes she pursued and received a Certificate of License to preach the Gospel of Ministry in 2005, followed by obtaining her Certificate of Ordination in 2006 from Bethlehem Baptist Church, McKeesport, PA, where she delivered her first sermon as an Associate Minister, the beginning of several to come.  Up until the time of her passing, Cheryl was actively coordinating and planning church functions, occasionally teaching a computer class or two.

Carl Johnson, 76, was born September 15, 1943 to the late Charles and Sindora (Williams) Johnson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Carl  departed this life on  July 30, 2020 in his home. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Clara Johnson, sister, Renne Woodard, brother Ward Williams, and twin brother, Charles  Johnson.  

Carl graduated from high school and shortly after, was inducted into the United States Army for two years. During the course of his life, Carl was a hard worker. He retired from National Tube Works and the Maintenance Department at Century III Mall. His family remembers the words of wisdom he gave to everyone he knew and met.

Gertrude Virginia Jackson, 74, was born September 10, 1945, to the late Moylan and Grace (Willis) Turner in McKeesport, Pa. Gertrude passed away on  July 25, 2020, at Jefferson Hospital, Jefferson Hills, PA. She was also preceded in death by her sister Lana Williams.

She was a life long member of First A.M.E. where she served on the Adult Usher Board and was a member of the Hospitality Committee. Gertrude worked as a Mail Clerk for Jefferson Hospital until she retired. She loved to cook, especially chicken. Her hobbies included crocheting and in her pastime, she would love to go to the casino. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.

Gertrude is survived by her children sons, Gerald Turner of McKeesport, Avanalist (Rachel) Jackson, Jr. of Hazelwood, Dwayne (Regina) Jackson of Clairton, Steven (Sonya) Jackson of Mississippi; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren;    sisters, Delores  Russell of Levittown, Norma Smith of Clairton, Sherrill Marbra of Bristol, Thymi Turner of Jefferson Hills; brother, Moylan  Turner of Clairton; devoted companion, Thomas Webb; aunts, Edith (James) Worthy, Janice Watts, both of Clairton, Geraldine Jackson of Pittsburgh; uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Loving daughter of Jennifer Czarniecki and John Jones. Survived by grandmother, Jean Zebroski; aunt Jessica Richter; uncles Anthony Jaskulski and Dan Czarniecki; cousin Austin George and her countless friends. A 2013 graduate of McKeesport High School, Jacqueline was a compassionate, vibrant personality, who unconditionally loved her family, her friends, and her two dogs Bella and Fendi. Jacqueline enjoyed basketball, hanging out with her family and friends, music, and embodying the heart and soul of a people person, keeping all of those people around her flowing with joy and laughter.

Tera Meade-Smith, 49, of Clairton, was born on March 14, 1971 to Patricia (Weatherspoon) Meade and the late Terry Meade in McKeesport, Pa. Peachcake, as she was affectionately called by family and friends, unexpectedly passed away on July 22, 2020 in her home. She was preceded in death by her son Tauveá Hurt and brother Patrick Meade of Detroit, Michigan.  

Peachcake, a graduate of Clairton High School, was loved. For many years she worked as a Direct Care Specialist at Q.A.C.S. She loved people, and she shared that love while working as a Home Health Aide. She lived her life to the fullest, she was a member of the Hollywood Club Ladies Darts team.

Peachcake was a dedicated mother who loved spending time with her children, especially her grandchildren. A loving wife, who embraced spending time at home with her husband. She treasured her time with family and friends, often cooking and feeding them. Peachcake enjoyed playing cards, sitting on her porch and listening to good music. In addition to a good laugh, she loved to shop, go to the movies, and out to eat.
