Thomas E. Grygo, 93, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2022. He was born February 28, 1929 in McKeesport and was the son to the late Leo "Bozo" and Miona (Riley) Grygo. He was the husband to the late Anna R. Grygo, who passed away September 4, 2021. Thomas grew up Catholic and was a former member of St. Perpetua. In his youth, he was a gymnast & throughout his life, he remained an avid jogger. He would listen to music while jogging, but his favorite artist to listen to was Frank Sinatra. He served in the Army, and then went on to work for US Steel for many years before retirement. Thomas absolutely adored his wife, Anna, and devoted his time to taking great care of her throughout their lives together, especially into her later years before her passing. He was a dog lover, and enjoyed spending his time playing and taking care of them too.

Gayle Elizabeth Bales, 81, of Monroeville, formerly of Versailles Boro, passed away Sunday, December 18, 2022. She was born May 7, 1941 in McKeesport and the daughter of the late Gordon C. and Alma E. (Dobrish) Kengle. She was the wife of the late Charles Lester Bales who passed away October 19, 2020. Gayle was a nurse for over 35 years at UPMC McKeesport Hospital. She was a member of the former St. John's Lutheran Church in McKeesport. Gayle enjoyed doing needle-point, embroidery, and doing sudoku, word searches and adult coloring books..

Alice Marie Hasson, 95, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Friday, December 16, 2022 at home. She was born February 14, 1927 in Martin and was the daughter of the late Andrew F. and Mary (Saliek) Ponick. She was the wife of the late Henry Walker Hasson who passed away in 1986. Alice was retired from UPMC McKeesport Hospital. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing Day Lillies and other flowers. She loved to read, travel and discuss history. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Kenneth) Hayward of White Oak, son, David H. (Sandra) Hasson of Elizabeth Township, grandchildren, Erin (fiancée, Michael Haubeil) Hayward, and Ryker H. (Rachelle) Hasson, great-granddaughter, Maddie Jean Hasson, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Andrew Ponick, sisters, Margaret Lilley and Mary Louise Ponick, and great-grandson, Nolan Hasson. There is no visitation. Edward H. "Ted" Mains, Jr., 73, of Penn Township, formerly of White Oak, passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2022. He was born April 1, 1949 in Greenock, and was the son of the late Edward H. Mains, Sr., and the late Margaret (Heholt) Mains. Ted graduated from Elizabeth Forward High School, class of 1967 and went into the Army during the Vietnam Era, serving from 1969-1971 as a Military Policeman. After his time in the Army, he worked for W.E. Mains Landscape as a Landscaping Contractor. Ted and his wife, Roberta, were long time members of Sacred Heart, St. Martin de Porres, Corpus Christi, and now of St. Angela Church. Ted was a former WOAA Board of Director, and Football & Softball Coach. In 1999, he underwent a kidney/pancreas double transplant. Post transplant, he stayed active with the transplant community, participating as an athlete and a member of Team Alleghenies, where he won 2 gold medals in golf. Ted really enjoyed starting his day with a "Bunch of Old Guys" getting coffee and breakfast. One of the most important things to do was spending time with his family. Between sporting events, school concerts, or vacations at their South Carolina beach house, Ted prioritized family and the memories they've made over the years.

Albert Edward Janus, 71, of West Mifflin, passed away Saturday, December 10, 2022 at home. He was born January 12, 1951 in McKeesport and was the son of the late Edward and Helen (Kapolka) Janus. He was the husband of the late Stephenie "Sue" (Lips) Janus who passed away November 21, 2014. Albert had worked for the former Guardian Glass in West Elizabeth, Rimoldi of America, and US Steel Homestead Works. He was a US Army veteran and had served during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Elizabeth Township Ex-Serviceman's Association in Boston. Albert enjoyed Fishing, Hunting, Camping and watching a wide variety of TV shows. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler and Penguin fan. Albert also enjoyed cooking, especially making his famous "Alby Burgers."

Mitzi R. Wigand, 85, of McKeesport passed away peacefully on Friday, December 9, 2022. She was born August 29, 1937 in McKeesport and was daughter of the late John and Rose (Biro) Mathe. Mitzi worked for the Allegheny County Magistrate and then went onto work as the McKeesport Police Chief Secretary for 20 years. She was a board member of the City of McKeesport Credit Union, and also a Union Steward at Local 205. She was a dedicated member of Beulah Park United Methodist Church and involved in many of their community activities. She especially loved working at the church thrift store with all her friends. Mitzi loved striking up conversations with everyone - no one was a stranger. She was sure to know someone everywhere she went.

Kathryn Diamond, 88, of Springbrook Township, PA, formerly of McKeesport, passed away Friday, December 2, 2022. She was born October 20, 1934 in McKeesport and was the daughter of the late Richard and Leona (Pencoski) Diamond. Kathryn graduated with her Associates degree from California State College. She worked as a School Nurse for the McKeesport Area School District for many years prior to retirement. She was a long time member of St. Pius V., and eventually became a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish, Corpus Christi. She is survived by her son-in-law, Archie Parker; granddaughter, Jillian (Jeremy) Wall; and great-grandson, Alexander Wall. Kenneth J. "Ken" Kuchma, 80, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Thursday, December 1, 2022. He was born February 12, 1942 in West Mifflin and was the son of the late John F. and Margaret (Kapolka) Kuchma. Ken worked as a fireman for the City of Duquesne for 26 years and then was currently working as a machinist at Dougherty Tool and Dye, in Elizabeth Township for the last 18 years. He was a very hard worker, who loved his wife and family very much. Ken enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also liked to watch the Pittsburgh sports teams and his grandchildren's sporting events. He will be greatly missed.

Jeffrey A. “Jeff” Smith, 44, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Jeff was born September 27, 1978 in McKeesport and was the son of David R. “Dave” and Maureen (Holko) Smith of Elizabeth Twp. Jeff was a graduate of Elizabeth Forward High School and went on to obtain his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Logistics from Penn State University. He had also worked in sales at Barnes and Noble. He had a deep love of history, which carried throughout his life. Jeff was a devoted Pittsburgh Pirates fan and was well known for his ability to recite baseball statistics to any inquiring mind at a drop of a hat. He loved the outdoors; especially downhill and cross-country skiing, kayaking and hiking. His family meant the world to him and he loved gathering together for the holidays. He will be remembered fondly for his joyous laugh, his caring heart, intelligent mind, and for his ability to recite every great line from Beverly Hills Cop.

Edward Louis Gronlund Jr. of Elizabeth Township died at the age of 86 on Sunday, November 27, 2022. Born March 10, 1936, he was the son of the late Edward Sr. and Dorothy Campbell Gronlund. A printer by profession, he was an employee/owner of Wivagg Printing in McKeesport, where he worked over 50 years. Ed’s life is defined by his work ethic, service to his country & community, and his ability to entertain others with his storytelling and humor. He served in the US Army, was a lifetime member & president of Central Volunteer Fire Company, served on the Elizabeth Township on the Board of Commissioners, supported numerous local and national organizations, coached little league baseball, co-founded his beloved Boar’s Nest hunting camp, and was always willing to lend his time and talents to others in need.
