Nina Akins Johnson, 79, of McKeesport, was born January 15, 1944, in Duquesne, PA. She was the beloved daughter to the late Virgil and Katie Sommers Akins. Nina departed this life on August 9, 2023, peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones.

Nina attended school in the Duquesne City School District. After graduating she later enrolled in CCAC and received her associate's degree in child development. Nina loved working with children and used her education to become a teacher at the rec center in Crawford Village in McKeesport PA.

She was a second “mom” to so many children and she loved her role and enjoyed teaching them every day. She was also employed with the Louise Child Care Program and the Outreach Center at the YMCA in McKeesport, PA. She loved spending time with her family. One fond memory was her traveling with her children to Las Vegas. A family trip they will always cherish.

She was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in North Versailles, PA.

She was preceded in death by her father, Virgil Akins, Sr., mother, Katie Sommers Akins, spouse, Ralph Johnson, Sr., son, Brian Johnson, granddaughter, Princess Johnson, brother, Virgil Akins, Jr.

Nina is survived by her beloved children; daughter, Angelina Johnson, two sons, Keith Johnson and Ralph Johnson; all of McKeesport, PA., eight, grandchildren; Kierre Johnson, Ashate` Johnson, Dre`Karr Johnson, Naomi Johnson, Edwin Batista, Jr., Kai Johnson, Cameron Johnson, Taylor Turner; two, great-grandchildren; Nova Anderson and Luna Anderson; seven, sisters, Lillian Staples, Earlene Davis, Delphene Johnson, and Beverly Montgomery, Priscilla Akins, Hilda Akins and Merial Shabazz; two brothers; Ronald and Dwight Akins; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Arrangements were in care of Robert A. Waters Funeral Home.
