Fred W. Porterfield, 81, of Irwin, died Friday January 8, 2016. He was born July 5, 1934 in Kittanning, a son of the late Jay and Rhoda C. Smith Porterfield and was also preceded in death by siblings, James D. McClelland, John J. Porterfield, and Jane L. Warner. Fred was a graduate of the Pittsburgh Barber School, class of 1960, and a retired barber operating Fred’s Barber Shop, on Clay Pike, in North Huntingdon.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Irwin, and a former longtime member and deacon of the United Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. He was also a member of Shidle Lodge, No. 601, F. & A.M., Irwin, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Pittsburgh, and the North Huntingdon A.A.R.P. bowling league. Fred was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his loving wife of over 61 years, Theda Lockhart Porterfield; children, Fred J. (Patty) Porterfield of Irwin, David J. Porterfield (fiancé Cindy) of Winter Haven, FL, and Kimberly (Don) Jackel of North Huntingdon; grandchildren, Kristy (Alan) Gareis, Brandon Porterfield (fiancé Tracy) , Amanda (Kurt) Mitchell, Joel Porterfield, Joshua (Mary Beth) Porterfield, and Cody Totin; five great grandchildren; also nieces and nephews. At the families request there will be no viewing. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in First Presbyterian Church, 617, Main Street, Irwin, with Rev. Ronald Durika, officiating. A Masonic Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Private interment will be in Union Cemetery.
