Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | July 03, 2020

With deepest sorrow, we announce that Benjamin Bowman, age 78, our beloved father, brother, family member and friend passed away on Monday, June 29, 2020 while in Family Hospice.

Benjamin was born August 2, 1941, to Geneva (Murrough) Bowman and Willie Bowman in Irmo, South Carolina.  The oldest of seven girls and boys.

Those who knew Benjamin, even just a little, lost a shining light in their lives.  He was a man of courage, determination, and loyalty.  His motto was “nobody beats the Bo”.

Benjamin worked in construction for over 30 years.  Life sometimes placed challenges in his path and like the athlete he was, he faced the challenges head-on and overcame them.  Benjamin was a 3-time Cancer Survivor.  Only when cancer challenged him a 4th time did he quietly leave us.  He would have said, “you try to win but sometimes you will lose”.

Benjamin loved football.  He was a Running Back for Thomas Jefferson High School.  Thomas Jefferson celebrated its 50th year of varsity football in 2008.  The school selected its top 50 football players in the school’s history during the years 1965 – 2007.  Benjamin’s son, Pedro, also a Running Back, was named one of the top 50 players in the 50-year history.  Thomas Jefferson also named “noteworthy” players during the years 1959 – 1964.  Benjamin was recognized as a “noteworthy” player during this latter period.  Benji also played semi-pro football for a couple of years with the Wheeling WV Ironmen.  He continued his love of football by being a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan.

Continuing his participation in sports, Benji boxed and participated in the Golden Gloves.  He also played softball when he resided in Clairton.  Later when he moved to Monroeville, he joined a bowling league.  The oldest man on his team and one of its best players. His bowling score was often above 250 and when questioned about his score he would say “not bad for an old man”.  He was a man that liked to challenge his body through sports and working out at the gym.

Benjamin has been predeceased by his mother Geneva Bowman, father Willie Bowman, brother Gerald Bowman, sons Dallas Bowman and Timothy West.   He is survived by his children Willadine East of Monroeville Pa., Pedro Bowman (Lori) of Beaver Falls Pa., Kimberly Smith of West Mifflin Pa., Kamille Bowman of West Mifflin Pa, Stormy Gordon (Bruce) of St. Croix VI, Benjamin Ingram of Jefferson Hills Pa, Katisha Bowman of Duquesne Pa., Brian Bowman of Glendale AZ, Dana Miller of Texas., Carla Scott, Ruth Davenport of Monessen Pa., and Naomi Walker of Philadelphia.  He is also survived by siblings Mary Ella Davis of Hershey Pa, Nana Lee Howard of West Mifflin Pa, Willie Bowman Jr. of Trafford Pa, Delores  Bowman of Fairlawn NJ, and Geraldine Bowman of Fairlawn NJ.,26 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, Rose Arnold a special friend of the family and other friends.
