Bruce R. Stewart

William Snyder Funeral Home

Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | October 18, 2023

Bruce R. Stewart, 73, of North Huntingdon, passed away Monday, October 16, 2023, with his wife and sons by his side. Born August 14, 1950 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Robert and Jean (Sharp) Stewart.

A 1968 graduate of McKeesport High School, Bruce went on to graduate with both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He retired after 40 years as a senior structural engineer for Wheelabrator Air Pollution Control. While an engineer by profession, he was gifted in so many other ways. Bruce could cook a 5-course meal to perfection, design and grow intricate landscaping, sing along to any musical, and quote corny Mel Brooks movies.

Above all, Bruce was called to teach. He somehow paired his unwavering Christian faith with his love of all things mathematical. He devoted his life to teaching the Lutheran faith, sharing his vast study and wisdom with others. Hundreds of children passed through Bruce’s carefully crafted Sunday School lessons – he could weave a story together not just with felt and glue, but with love. Over the years, more than 150 students solved impossible math challenges with him at the tutoring table one problem at a time. You didn’t meet Bruce and not learn something – his knowledge was boundless.

Bruce’s light and life was his family. As husband, father, grandfather, godfather, family member and trusted friend, Bruce made every moment one of magic and memory, creating a new tradition or affirming an existing one at every interaction. The impact he has had on others will reverberate for generations to come.

Bruce is survived by his wife of over 48 years Georgia A. (Snyder) Stewart; son Benjamin R. Stewart of North Huntingdon and Joshua R. (Charles Guthrie) Stewart of Pittsburgh; grandson Thatcher Guthrie-Stewart; mother-in-law Anne L. Snyder; sisters-in-law Barbara (Joseph) Kayda, Lynda (Andy Baran) Snyder, Roberta (Randy) Harriger, and CDR Patti (Gene Block) Snyder USN (Ret.), brother-in-law Dr. Gary (Dr. Stella Volpe) Snyder; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his grandmother who helped raise him Nelda Stewart; and father-in-law George Snyder.

Friends and family will be received from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the William Snyder Funeral Home, 521 Main Street, Irwin, 724-863-1200. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 21, at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Irwin with Rev. Sara Lee Faulkner officiating. Private interment will be at Union Cemetery in Irwin. Memorial contributions can be made to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where Bruce and Georgia first met, and where he and his family are members. (502 Main Street, Irwin, PA 15642)
