Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | December 08, 2021

Donald C. Thomson, age 79, of North Huntingdon, passed to Heaven on December 3, 2021. Born in Pittsburgh on January 29, 1942, he grew up on the North Side and was the son of the late Charles and Dolores (Miller) Thomson.  Don was the husband of Carolyn (Volk) Thomson.

In addition to his wife, Don is survived by children Eric (Cheryl) Thomson and Ann (Mark) Tanis; grandchildren Sarah Thomson, Charlie Thomson, Rachel Tanis, and Abby Tanis; sisters Joan Seigworth and Lois Thomson; nephews David Volk and Michael Seigworth; and nieces Heidi (Steve) Stimple and Kristin (Damien) Cooney.

Don was a true servant of God, with unwavering faith in his Lord Jesus Christ, a selfless love for his family and those around him, and a fervent love of his country.  Don poured himself into supporting his church, Evangelical Congregational Church in McKeesport, where he taught Sunday School, was president of the church council, sang in the choir, and served as a lay pastor.

He founded and managed the Westmoreland County Conservative Coalition for more than 20 years, holding regular meetings and writing a monthly newsletter.  He also was a strong advocate for the unborn child.

Don worked tirelessly to serve others via McKeesport Area Meals on Wheels, for which he wrote grants, served on the board, delivered meals, and procured food donations.  He always made himself available for whatever his family and friends needed, and sought opportunities to go the extra mile.  Don was not only concerned about others' tangible needs but also their spiritual well-being.  His life was an intentional example that instilled a strong faith in his family and led others to a knowledge of the Lord.  Don did all of this without hesitation, complaint, or the expectation of accolades.

Before beginning his career, Don served in the Army National Guard.  He worked as a traffic manager for the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad and the Ohio Central Railroad for 35 years, and this fueled his love of trains. Don's life revolved around his family, and he participated in so many areas of their lives, including watching and assisting with his grandchildren's sports and planning special vacations and outings.  He loved watching the Penguins and Pirates and was thrilled to twice participate in Pirates' Fantasy Camp in Bradenton, FL.

Other interests included reading, gardening, and traveling - to Canada and Europe - and especially taking cross-country road trips out West where he loved being among the majestic mountains. Don's life can be summed up in 2 Timothy 4:7‑8: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." Upon his arrival in Heaven, he surely heard the greeting, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, January 8, 2022, at Evangelical Congregational Church, 312 Olive Street (corner of Olive and Walnut Streets), McKeesport, PA, 15132.  Friends and family will be received from 12:30 p.m. until the celebration begins at 1 p.m.  A dinner will follow at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to McKeesport Area Meals On Wheels, 1406 Cornell St, McKeesport, PA 15132, Samaritan's Purse, https://www.samaritanspurse.org, or the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, https://t2t.org.  Arrangements were entrusted to Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory.  Condolences and memories may be shared at www.jaycox-jaworskifh.com.
