Edward Slater, age 85, of Liberty Borough, died April 13, 2016, at Washington County Health Center. Born August 18, 1930, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Edward and Edith (Nystrom) Slater and the husband of the late Rachel “Rae” (Hyndman) Slater, for nearly 65 loving years, whom he married on February 17, 1951.

Ed retired from US Steel , where he worked as a roofer. He was a dedicated member of the Liberty Presbyterian Church for over 70 years and was a US Army veteran serving in Korea, during the Korean War. Ed dedicated 50 years of service to the Liberty Borough Community, serving as Mayor for 34 years and prior to that he served on council, for 16 years. He was also a Liberty Borough Volunteer Fire Fighter in his earlier years. He was a member of the Youghiogheny Lodge 583 F&AM and various veterans organizations. Ed also enjoyed Pittsburgh sports.
He is survived by a son, Reese (Joni) Slater of Wheeling, WV; grandchildren, Andrew, of Bloomington, IN, Scott, Carly, and Kristen of Wheeling, WV; also nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Ed was preceded in death by a son Kevin; siblings, Edith Nylander, Lawrence Slater and Helen Varkonda.
Family and friends will be received at Willig Funeral Home & Crematory on Friday, April 15, 2016, from 2 -4 p.m. and 7 – 9 p.m. and Saturday, from Noon until the time of service at 1 p.m. Rev. Charissa Howe will officiate. Burial will be in Jefferson Memorial Park. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Liberty Presbyterian Church, 900 Elizabeth St., McKeesport, PA 15133.
