Stoyan Popovich died Friday, the 29th of January 2016 at McKeesport Hospital.     

Stoyan Popovich (91) was born near Belgrade, Serbia in 1924.  His father was the Very Rev. Milan G. Popovich, an Oxford scholar, who built the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church in McKeesport.

He is survived by his brother, Zoran Popovich, former Mayor of McKeesport and Superior Court Judge, his sister, Stoyanka Vranesevic and his brother, Ray Popovich.

With his first wife, Florence Regina Meisenhelter (Tori) they had children:  Milan (Florida), Stoyan (Maryland), Melanie (Florida), Zoran (Colorado), and Marian (Virginia).  He has grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Stoyan served in the U.S. Army during WW II as a medic in England.  After the war, he played semi-pro football with the Pittsburgh Ironmen.  He worked 35 years for General Motors at the Fisher Body Plant in West Mifflin, retiring in 1987.

At the age of 58, Stoyan married his wife of 32 years, Mary Ann Strager Mamula.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by family friend William Hunter of the Hunter Funeral Home in McKeesport.

Viewing will be at the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church at 901 Hartman Street in McKeesport, on Monday morning from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM.   The funeral service will begin at 10:30 AM.

Interment will be at the McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery in McKeesport.
