Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | January 03, 2026

Frederick W. Mehlmauer, Jr., age 77, of McKeesport, died December 29, 2025, at the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center. Born November 15, 1948, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Frederick Sr. and Margaret (Caldwell) Mehlmauer and the beloved partner of Joan DeMarino for 33 years.

Fred honorably served in the Army during the Vietnam War, an experience that shaped his values and spirit. He held his military service dearly, embodying the principles of courage and commitment. Upon returning home, he channeled his exuberance into his enduring love for classic cars, passionately maintaining two 1961 Chevy Impalas-a convertible and a hardtop-for over 50 years. His enthusiasm and deep understanding of these vehicles made him a well-respected figure among fellow car enthusiasts, and he cherished the many memories made while attending car shows alongside Joan.

Fred was a true aficionado of 50s and 60s R&B music, which sparked a lifelong romance when he met Joan at the Society of Oldies Collectors. His extensive collection of 45 RPM records showcased his profound knowledge of music artists and labels, and he often shared this wealth of information with anyone who showed an interest. Music was not just his hobby; it was a thread that wove together friendships, memories, and joy throughout his life.
In addition to Joan, Fred is survived by sisters, Margaret Walsh and Catherine Pusateri; sister-in-law, Dianne (George) Shaffer; nephews, William (Susan) Shaffer and Stephen (Sandra) Walsh; the Mehlmauer and Straub cousins; and his cats, Lenny, Squiggy, and Frankie. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Christine Loeffert. The services for Fred will be private. Arrangements were entrusted to Willig Funeral Home & Crematory. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.willigfuneralcremationservices.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation at parkinson.org/donate.
