Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | September 15, 2025

Mary Jane Portner, age 85, of Port Vue, died September 13, 2025, at Concordia of Franklin Park. Born April 2, 1940, in Port Vue, she was the daughter of the late John and Susan (Cikot) Wasil and the wife of James Portner.  Mary Jane was a member of Saints Joachim and Anne Parish. Her heart was as vibrant as the gardens she lovingly tended. Her passion for gardening reflected her nurturing spirit; she found joy in the simple beauty of flowers and the comfort of nature, which served as a backdrop to countless family memories. Mary was particularly proud of her granddaughters, Ashley and Rebecca, lighting up at the thought of their achievements and the memories they created together. Those who knew her could attest to her kind-heartedness and the generosity she extended to anyone fortunate enough to cross her path.

She is survived by her children, Karen (Robert) Tyree and David (the late Judy) Portner, and her granddaughters, Ashley and Rebecca Portner. She is also survived by a sister-in law, Emma Wasil; nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by siblings, John Wasil, Albert (Kay) Wasil, Edward Wasil, Dorothy (Victor) Stella, Agnes Wasil, Caroline Wasil, and Mildred Wasil.  Family and friends will be received at Willig Funeral Home & Crematory on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Saints Joachim and Anne Parish, St. Eugene Church. The burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Port Vue. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.willigfuneralcremationservices.com.
