James A. "Grumpy" Neher, age 89, of McKeesport, died May 7, 2025, at Kane Community Living Center in McKeesport. Born November 12, 1935, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late William Neher and Helen (Zolczar) Neher Oleska and husband of the late Adele (Behary) Neher. James was a proud veteran of the United States Army, enlisting on November 15, 1954, and serving until his honorable discharge on September 26, 1958, where he achieved the rank of Specialist 4 (E-4). His service to his country was not just a chapter in his life, but a testament to his dedication to the values of duty and honor. After his time in the Army, James had a successful career for over 50 years as a truck driver, ending his career with Great American Truck Lines, where he navigated the open roads with the same spirit of adventure and commitment that defined his life. As a lifelong resident of the McKeesport area, he was a familiar face to many, always ready to share a story. James was a member of the Free Hungarian Reformed Church in McKeesport, where he found a deep sense of belonging and community.
James is survived by a son, James F. (Carleen) Neher. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by siblings, Ronald Neher, William Neher, and Elaine (Neher) Fritsche. Family and friends will be received at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home & Crematory on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, from 10 a.m. until the memorial service at noon.
