Leonard “Leo” J. Ostrosky, age 91, of East McKeesport, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2020. He was born November 6, 1928 in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late John and Catherine Ostrosky. He was a long time member of St. Robert Bellarmine Church in East McKeesport and the American Legion in White Oak. He served in the US Army in Korea and went onto work for over 37 years as a Mill Wright for U.S. Steel in Braddock. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Teofil Ostrosky; and sister Cecilia Yohn. He is survived by his wife of over 67 years Bernice M. (Uschock); sons Thomas (Barbara) Ostrosky, James (Elizabeth) Ostrosky and David (Diane) Ostrosky; grandchildren Kimberly and Joseph Ostrosky and Katie (Adam) Yeargin; brother Robert (Judy) Ostrosky; and sister Patricia (John) Sauers.

Daniel K. Mowery, 75, of North Huntingdon, passed away Monday, January 6, 2020. He was born May 27, 1944 in Irwin, a son of the late LeRoy and Helen (Barrett) Mowery. Dan was a 1962 graduate of Norwin High School, and was a proud U.S. Army veteran that served in the Vietnam Conflict from 1966 – 1968 receiving the Purple Heart. Prior to retirement he worked at Westinghouse (various locations), and as a corrections officer for SCI Pittsburgh and SCI Fayette. He was a lover of muscle cars especially his Corvette, a member of American Legion Post 359, Irwin, and a social member of North Irwin Fireman’s Club.

Elaine M. (Manuele) Becker, 87, a resident of Redstone Highlands, formerly of Irwin, died Saturday, January 4, 2020. She was born September 6, 1932 in Munhall, a daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Brennan) Manuele. Elaine was a graduate of Margaret Morrison Carnegie College.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Irwin, and was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Irwin Chapter 400, a Past Royal Matron of the Order of The Amaranth, Jeannette Chapter 25, and a charter member and past Worthy Advisor for the Irwin Chapter of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls. She was also a volunteer for Norwin Area Meals On Wheels for over 20 years.

Lloyd Paul Miller, 87, of Irwin, died Tuesday December 31, 2019, at Golden Heights, Irwin. He was born October 9, 1932 in East McKeesport, a son of the late Lloyd P. and Esther Johnson Miller.

He was a retired employee of Bell Telephone with 37 years’ service. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Irwin and a former active member of Lutheran Church of Our Savior, North Huntingdon. He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict and an avid woodworker and bowler and enjoyed photography. He built both homes his family was raised in.

Paul wintered in Florida for many years with his late wife Suzanna and was a loving father and grandfather.

She worked in the drive thru of Wendy’s Restaurant in Irwin for over 23 years before retiring. She loved to golf, bowl, and travel once a year to Las Vegas and enjoyed coffee with her close friend and neighbor Susan.

She is survived by her husband of over 63 years Joseph C. Schiavone; children Joseph (Marcy) Schiavone of Greensburg, Michael (Mary) Schiavone of Harrison City, Kenny Schiavone of Pittsburgh, and James Schiavone, Ralph (Roxane) Schiavone, and Robert (Denise) Schiavone all of Irwin; 9 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and her sister Jonella.

David J. Singler, 66, of North Huntingdon, died Wednesday December 25, 2019.  He was born February 19, 1953 in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Delbert Leo and Dorothy M. (Wiggins) Singler and was also preceded in death by his brother Delbert L. Singler, killed in action while serving in the Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. 

Dave was a truck driver for Maroadi Transfer & Storage, North Versailles, for nearly 50 years. He enjoyed NASCAR and supported Donald Trump.

He is survived by his children David (Erica) Singler of Peachtree, GA, Johnathan Singler of North Charleroi, Lindsay (Joshua) Davis of Trafford, Angela Singler of Pittsburgh, and Ashley Singler of Virginia Beach, VA; his grandchildren Spencer Singler, Johnathan Singler, and Ariella Davis; his sisters Jeannette (Gordon) Stoves of North Irwin, and Nancy Waibel, Maryann (Drew) Daniels, and Dorothy Mae Morris all of Irwin; also nieces and nephews and his dear friend for over 30 years Edward Megahan.

She worked as a secretary for the US Navy in Washington, D.C. for over 10 years, then at Rene’s Restaurant in East McKeesport for several years and finally at a woman’s shelter in McKeesport for over 5 years. She loved watching sports especially anything from Pittsburgh, baking, and spending time with her two favorite dogs Hemi and Zoe.

She is survived by her husband of over 53 years Robert S. LaViolette; daughter Danielle (Fiancé Rodney Roberts) Fuss of Waynesboro; grandchildren Duane Pomaibo and Brent (Angel Dreyfus) Pomaibo; great grandchild Carter Pomaibo; brother Thomas David (Angie) Barr of Blairsville; sister Linda (John) Swanson of East McKeesport; Niece Amy (Nick) Luffey; and nephews David (girlfriend Elaine “E.J.”) Barr and Eric (Heather) Barr.

Dr. Harry K. Gillespie, retired pediatrician, age 94 of Irwin, passed away peacefully on Monday December 9, 2019. Loving father of seven children, Mary Ellen (Joseph) Ferragonio, James (Ana) Gillespie, David (Rose Mary) Gillespie, Charlotte (Charles) Fisher, Sarah (Eugene) Pile, Elizabeth (David) Haushalter, and Douglas (Heidi) Gillespie.

Caring grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle to numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and their families. He is also survived by his sister Nancy Troy and cousin Lucy (Joe) Russell. In addition to his wife Eleanor, Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Loretta, and siblings Richard, Philip Jr., and Susan Mormon.

A graduate of Central Catholic High School, a U.S. Navy veteran, and graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Gillespie was a longtime practicing pediatrician in Irwin and White Oak as well as at Jeannette and McKeesport hospitals, touching the lives of many patients and families over the length of his career.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Irwin, where he cantered mass and served as a member of the choir for many years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus #1480 Greensburg. Dr. Gillespie was ahead of his time when it came to enjoying the great outdoors, recycling, and doing his part in taking care of Mother Earth. He will be fondly remembered for his kindness, his steadfast faith, his gentle demeanor, maintaining an active lifestyle, and his ever-present sense of humor.

Gerald J. “Jerry” Robinson, age 69, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, December 7, 2019. Jerry, also known as Chico, also known as Buddy, was born on October 11, 1950 to the late George and Violet (Donati) Robinson of Pitcairn. Jerry was a veteran of the US Navy serving in the Vietnam Conflict. He spent his career in the construction field as one of the finest plasterers in the area and was a member of the OPCMIA, Local 31. His work can be admired all around Pittsburgh, including Heinz Hall and Kennywood.

He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Versailles. Jerry was infamous for many things. He loved being outdoors on his quad, fishing, hunting, and camping. He was known for his secret recipe grilled chicken and making homemade wine, prosciutto, sauerkraut and sausage. In his recent years, Jerry spent his time babysitting his grandchildren, whom he spoiled with whatever they wanted. They remember him for his love cowboy shows on TV, Ovaltine, and buying them happy meals.

Kenneth F. West, age 88, of Penn Hills passed away Thursday, November 28, 2019. He was born August 12, 1931 in Duquesne, a son of the late Lewis and Elizabeth West. He attended the Grace Baptist Church in Monroeville. He was an Army veteran that went on to work as a computer operator for U.S. Steel for over 40 years before retiring. Ken coached the little leagues baseball, participated in the neighborhood bowling league, and delivered Meals-on-Wheels food. He had a great sense of humor, was kind-hearted and will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son Wayne West.
