Paul F. Thompson

Paul F. Thompson, age 88, of North Huntingdon, died Friday, August 4, 2023, at home.  Born August 20, 1934, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Frederick and Violet (Bailie) Thompson and husband of the late Janet A. Thompson.  Paul worked at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory for 41 years.  He was one of the pioneering technicians in the field of US Navy nuclear submarine propulsion during the cold war and contributed to the development and implementation of the first successful nuclear power plant in the USS Nautilus.  He was a metallurgical technician for decades and completed his Bettis service in a lead technician role as the plant glassblower.  After his retirement, he continued to work for Bettis as a private contractor, escorting uncleared construction personnel for another 12 years for a total of 53 years of service at Bettis.  He was an avid hunter and sportsman and enjoyed hunting in Marienville, Allegheny National Forest, family property in Portersville, and fishing trips to Canada.  Paul was a lifetime member of the Cavittsville Gun Club.  In his younger years, Paul had an affinity for convertible-topped automobiles.  His firm temper and clever wit gained him the respect and admiration of many.  He will be sorely missed by all whose lives "Big Red" touched.

George B. Spahr, Jr. age 87, of White Oak, died July 23, 2023, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Born April 5, 1936, in Homestead, he was the son of the late George B. and Kathryn (King) Spahr Sr. and the husband of Nora L. (Miller) Spahr.
George retired as a mechanic at Bob Massie Toyota. After retirement, he continued to work for #1 Cochran Automotive Group transporting cars to other dealerships. George loved cars and was known to be "always on the go." He was a member of the Sampson Mills Presbyterian Church.
George is survived by his son, Russ Spahr of Rostraver; grandchildren, Adam, Nathan, Wesley, and Aaron; many great-grandchildren; sisters, Norma Lee Martin and Elaine Leech of Florida; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, David Spahr, and daughter, Sue Rugg.

Genevieve S. Yuna, age 100, of North Versailles, died July 24, 2023, at Walden's View of North Huntingdon.  Born June 27, 1923, in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Wasil and Anna (Misczycha) Smolinsky and wife of the late Andrew Yuna.  Genevieve worked in the home office for the G.C. Murphy Company for over 40 years.  She was a member of the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church and also a "pirohi pincher."  Genevieve loved all Pittsburgh sports, was a season ticket holder for the Steelers, and attended three Super Bowls.  She had a passion for bingo, and casinos were a close second.  Genevieve always felt very blessed and was a lucky lady.

Joanne Marie Duncan, age 91, of McKeesport, died July 22, 2023, at The Palms at O'Neil. Born November 27, 1931, in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late John and Harriett (Barger) Duncan. Joanne attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and then the University of Pittsburgh, where she obtained her Master's degree.  After college, Joanne worked as a second-grade teacher for the West Mifflin School District until her retirement. She was a lifetime member of the McKeesport Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school. After church on Sundays, Joanne would always watch the Steelers games, and she was also a Pirates fan.  She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and the States.

Raymond M. Sobczak, age 89, of Port Vue, PA, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2023, at Grandview Estates in Elizabeth Township.  He was the son of the late Walter and Nellie Sobczak.  Ray was preceded in death by his wife Mary “Mitzi,” son Andrew “Phil,” brother Jacob “Jack,” and daughter-in-law Lynn (Dennis) Sobczak.  Ray truly loved his long career as an elevator construction/maintenance technician.  Ray enjoyed playing cards, especially with the Glassport Lucky 7 Card Club, bowling, and Port Vue Old Timers Softball.  He belonged to the former St. Mary Czestochowa Church in McKeesport and was a member of Port Vue Sons of the American Legion.  Ray was also a proud member of the Port Vue Fire Department.  He was the oldest member of the department with close to 70 years of service and was honored with the 50-Year Life Member award in 2008.

Sophie Balawajder, age 95, of Elizabeth Twp., died peacefully at home on July 13, 2023.  Born April 8, 1928, in Wilmerding, PA, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Apolonia (Szczypek) Lorenc and wife of the late Bruno Balawajder, to whom she was married for 44 years.  Sophie was a 67-year member of St. Mary of Częstochowa Church, now Mary, Mother of God Parish, Corpus Christi Church, in McKeesport, and was a past President of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers.  She had a love of family and friends, her faith, and her Polish heritage.  Her activities included ceramics, quilting, volunteering for the church, and baking.  Her quilts are cherished keepsakes for all her family members.  Many of the family celebrations had her cookies on the Cookie Table.  The family would like to thank everyone who made her years later in life comfortable by stopping by, making a phone call, or sending a birthday card.  Her long-term friends, known as the “Church Ladies,” always made her day, as well as her many nieces and nephews.  Her caregivers also are to be recognized for the comfort they provided.
