David F. Diebel, age 80, of North Huntingdon, died November 24, 2023, at Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital.  Born September 8, 1943, in Portland, OR, he was the son of the late Ele Oren and Matti Jean (Stapleton) Diebel and the loving companion of the late Barbara Jenkner.  David was a proud Marine Corps Veteran who served during the Vietnam War.  He was a White Oak American Legion Post 701 member and active in Westmoreland County church dartball leagues.  He was a car and motorcycle enthusiast with Triumphs, Indians, and Harleys.  David was also an avid sports fan rooting for the Pittsburgh teams professionally and Oregon and USC for college.

Robert A. Bonczek

Robert A. Bonczek, age 94, of McKeesport, died November 25, 2023, at home. Born December 19, 1928, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Paul and Helen (Janovitz) Bonczek and the husband of the late Doris Mae (Henry) Bonczek and the late Shirley (Marker) Bonczek.
Bob was the owner and operator of the former Bonczek Auto Service at the corner of Patterson Ave. and Walnut St. of McKeesport. He was also known as the undisputed "World's Finest Auto Mechanic!" Bob was a veteran of the US Army. He was a Staff Sergeant in the Screaming Eagle, 101st Airborne Division, serving during the Korean War, where he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars. He was also a member of Saints Joachim and Anne Parish. He loved boating on the Monongahela River, traveling, hunting, and fishing. Bob also enjoyed dancing and skeet shooting at the Clairton Sportsmen's Club.

Rae Ann (Pape) Szarmach, age 67, of McKeesport, died November 4, 2023, at The Grove at Irwin.  Born May 31, 1956, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Francis E. and Betty Jean (Miller) Pape.  Rae Ann worked as a cashier at Save A Lot Grocery and as a waitress for many years and always enjoyed spending time around the holidays with her family.  She is survived by siblings, Frances (Donald) Campas, Kim Pape, and Frank Pape; nephews, Justin Pape, Zack Buchleitner, and Donald Campas, Jr.; and a niece, Franki Pape.  Family and friends will be received at Willig Funeral Home & Crematory on Saturday, November 18, 2023, from 1 p.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 3 p.m.  Condolences and memories may be shared at www.willigfuneralcremationservices.com.  Charles Danforth, Supervisor

 


Michael W. Kelly

Michael W. "Mad Mike" Kelly, age 63, of Floreffe, died October 31, 2023, at home.  Born June 20, 1960, in Monongahela, he was the son of the late William R. and Frances (Yusteniz) Kelly.  Mike worked for Elizabeth Equipment Services as a truck driver hauling steel and took great pride in his work.  He enjoyed being outdoors, water skiing, skiing the slopes on the West Coast, dirt bike riding with his son, and taking the family out on his boat.  Mad Mike was a natural at horseshoes and was an incredible pool shark.  He is survived by children, Shaina (Clayton) Lucot, Casey Kelly, and Cody Kelly; grandchildren, Aubrie Lucot, Donovan Lucot, Ella Rohm, and Ryan Rohm; a brother, David Kelly and his dog, Dottie "Buggy. Dorothy A. Conaboy

Dorothy A. Conaboy crossed the Rainbow Bridge on November 3, 2023.  Waiting on the other side was her husband and soul mate, the late Thomas M. Conaboy.

Dorothy lived a full and fulfilling life.  Before becoming a resident of Asbury Heights in Mt. Lebanon, she lived in Liberty Borough and was a past member of St. Mark Parish and choir.  She retired from South Allegheny School District Food Service after 25 years of employment and was a graduate of Allegheny County Community College.  Dorothy loved to travel.  Her favorite trip was to Rome with her family to see the beginning of Christianity.  She enjoyed all the navy reunions with Tom.  An avid reader, no book was ever left unread, and the Sunday newspaper was never missed.  Her greatest enjoyment was her grandchildren and granddogs.

Ross Allen Burtner

Ross Allen Burtner, age 58, of Liberty Boro, died October 21, 2023, at home. Born April 2, 1965, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late JoAnn Russell and stepson of the late David "Buddy" Russell.
Ross was a carpenter for many years and enjoyed riding his motorcycle. 
He is survived by his son, Anthony Galati of New Eagle; grandchildren, Jayden and Carly Galati, both of McKeesport; great-grandson, Geovani Galati; siblings, Coral Burtner, Michael (Laura) Russell, and Shawn Burtner; a special friend, Kelly Galla; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Renea "Snowy" Russell.
A memorial service will be on Saturday, November 28, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in McKeesport.
Flowers will be received at the church between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Blank, age 77, of Butler, formerly of the McKeesport area, died October 17, 2023, at Butler Memorial Hospital.  Born May 9, 1946, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth C. and Elizabeth (Lockhart) Davis and the wife of the late Edward G. Blank, Sr.  Matilda was a die-hard Elvis fan, enjoyed to travel, and her most memorable trip was to Graceland with her son.  One of her favorite pastimes was playing the one-armed bandits at the casino.  She loved her family with all her heart and cherished her grandchildren.

Antes Nazaryk Evanchak, age 94, of Versailles Borough, died peacefully October 17, 2023, at Riverside Care Center of McKeesport. Born March 5, 1929, on Blaine Hill, Elizabeth, PA, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Theresa (Rusynik) Nazaryk and the beloved wife of the late Joseph "Cubby" Evanchak.

Antes was a dedicated wife, mother, and a woman of faith. She was a member of the St. Mary's Russian Orthodox Church of McKeesport. Antes enjoyed bingo and sweets of all kinds. Her greatest love was her grandchildren; she truly enjoyed the time she spent with them. Antes was a simple woman, with a loving heart and will be forever missed and celebrated by all those who knew her.

Christy J. Moore, age 51, of McKeesport, formerly Monongahela, PA, died October 17, 2023, at Kane Community Living Center of McKeesport. Born December 14, 1971, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Robert W. MacDonald and Louise (James W.) Pastorik Ganss of Decatur, TN.

Christy worked in her early years until her disability would no longer allow her to do so. She graduated from Garfield High School of Virginia Beach, VA, Class of 1989. Christy found peace in reading and enjoyed working on word puzzles.

David James Savage, age 29, of North Huntington, died October 15, 2023, at home. Born July 22, 1994, in McKeesport, he was the son of Alfred D. Savage and the late Yvonne (Moore) Savage and the husband of Juile (Shipley) Savage.

David graduated from South Allegheny High School. He truly loved the feeling of freedom and found that while riding his motorcycle.

Daniel Joseph Deemer, age 73, of McKeesport, died October 15, 2023, at home.  Born August 20, 1950, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Joseph M. and Helen (Nizinski) Deemer and the husband of Dottie L. (Braucher) Deemer.  Daniel honorably served his county in the Army and was on active duty from 1968 to 1974.  He was stationed in Vietnam and completed his education and training as a Field Wireman.  During his service, he was decorated and awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge of the U.S. Army.  Daniel was a very beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend. A champion of life, whether on or off the field, he was devoted to all that he loved.

Anthony W. Gallaher, age 41, of McKeesport, died October 8, 2023.  Born November 18, 1981, in McKeesport, he was the son of Jack (Annette Leitzell) Gallaher and Antonietta (Chiaverini) Stolic.  Anthony graduated from McKeesport Area High School in 2000, where he was First Team All-Conference in football and a State Qualifier in the shot put.  After high school, Anthony attended Lehigh University on a football scholarship.
He enjoyed home remodeling with his father, cooking meals for family and friends, and taught Culinary Arts at McKeesport High School for many years.  He also worked for his Stepfather at Wagner Development as a superintendent.
Anthony’s smile was infectious. He loved his family and always made sure to let them know any time he saw them as well as give everyone one of his big bear hugs.

Helen B. Widen

Helen B. Widen, age 93, of North Huntingdon, died October 9, 2023, at UPMC McKeesport Hospital.  Born February 19, 1930, in Daisytown, PA,  she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Dudash and wife of the late Carl H. Widen.  Helen "Betty" worked until she was 80 years old, cleaning various homes.  She also took meticulous care of her home, caring for the yard and tending to her flower garden.  Her favorite flowers were the peonies and roses, with some of the roses being transplanted from her mother's garden.  Betty always had a smile on her face anytime her grandchild and great-grandchildren were around.  She loved them dearly.  Betty is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Dennis) Englert; granddaughter, Courtney (Corey) Williams; great-grandsons, Cameron and Conor.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Carla J. Richard J. Watkins "Mr. Dickie", age 95, of McKeesport, died October 5, 2023, at home. Born October 17, 1927, in Greensburg, he was the son of the late Perry Blannon and Alberta (Ganie) Blannon and the husband of Rose (Campbell) Watkins.
He retired from the City of McKeesport as an Ordinance Officer. He was a United States Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. Richard loved to Barbecue; he would smoke everything from ham to ribs and sell it to everyone in the community.
